For visible algae, do not simply pour in a random amount of “shock” and hope for the best. Brush thoroughly, test CYA, and use an algae-treatment process that matches the stabilizer level. Chlorine must remain high enough for long enough to eliminate the problem. Keep the pump running, clean or backwash the filter when pressure rises, and retest until the water is clear and chlorine demand returns to normal.
Avoid adding algaecide and chlorine at the same time unless the product label specifically permits it. Some copper-based algaecides can stain plaster or light-colored surfaces, especially when water chemistry is already unstable.
