Strips are useful for a quick check, but they can be difficult to read in bright desert sunlight and are less dependable when alkalinity is significantly out of range. A proper test should include pH, TA, calcium hardness, free chlorine, and—if applicable—salt and stabilizer.

Test with the pump circulating, but collect the sample away from return jets, skimmer mouths, and chemical feeders. Take water from elbow depth. If you use a liquid reagent kit, follow the specified sample size and count each drop carefully. One extra drop can change the result by 10 ppm or more, depending on the kit.

Before making a correction, record:

  • Pool volume in gallons
  • Current pH and total alkalinity
  • Calcium hardness
  • Water temperature
  • Chlorine and cyanuric acid levels
  • Whether the pool has plaster, fiberglass, or a vinyl liner

This acid-and-aeration cycle may need to be repeated several times. The acid lowers alkalinity; aeration removes carbon dioxide and raises pH. Aeration alone does not meaningfully reduce TA. Never add dry acid and muriatic acid together. Sodium bisulfate can also reduce alkalinity, but it adds sulfate to the water. The right chemical depends on the water balance and equipment—not just the product on the shelf.
