For most residential pools, we generally aim for free chlorine around 2 to 5 parts per million (PPM), with the correct target depending on the stabilizer level and the pool's condition. Cyanuric acid, or CYA, protects chlorine from UV loss, but too much CYA can make chlorine less effective and complicate algae control.

Test free chlorine and pH more often during extreme heat—daily for a busy pool is reasonable. Keep pH in the 7.2 to 7.8 range, and pay particular attention when the water approaches 85°F. Warm water can develop algae quickly if chlorine falls behind, especially in shaded areas, steps, and behind ladders.

Do not wait for green water before responding. Cloudiness, slippery walls, a strong chloramine odor, or chlorine that repeatedly falls to near zero are warning signs. Brush the pool, clean the baskets, verify circulation, and test before adding chemicals. If a chlorine boost is needed, use the product and dosage appropriate for your pool volume and CYA level rather than pouring in an estimated amount. Never mix chlorine products with acids or other chemicals.

Run the Pump Strategically and Protect the Equipment Pad

During extreme heat, many pools benefit from extended low-speed circulation, with a higher-speed period for skimming, heating, salt-system operation, or water features. As a starting point, a clean, properly sized system may circulate at a low speed for 12 to 18 hours per day, then run faster for one or two shorter periods. The motor needs to discharge heat, and blocked airflow can shorten the life of bearings, capacitors, and electronics. Never spray a running motor with a hose. If the equipment area is exposed to direct afternoon sun, a properly ventilated shade structure can help, but it must not enclose the equipment or restrict airflow.

Know the Signs of Heat-Related Stress

Turn the system off and call for service if the pump repeatedly loses prime, makes grinding or screeching noises, trips the breaker, shows a fault code, or becomes too hot to operate normally. Some warmth is expected; a burning smell, melted wiring, discolored terminals, or a motor that shuts down and restarts after cooling is not.
