For most residential pools, we generally aim for a free chlorine level of 2 to 4 PPM, with pH between 7.2 and 7.8. The correct target depends on cyanuric acid (CYA), the pool’s stabilizer level, water temperature, equipment, and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Chlorine is not just about adding more product; it is about maintaining the right relationship between free chlorine and CYA.
Pro Tip: After a hot weekend or pool gathering, test free chlorine and combined chlorine the next morning. If free chlorine is low and combined chlorine is above 0.5 PPM, the pool has sanitizer demand that routine dosing may not correct.
The most common chlorine mistake we see in Lancaster, Palmdale, and Quartz Hill is dosing by habit instead of testing. A homeowner pours in a gallon of liquid chlorine every few days, then discovers the pool is either over-chlorinated or still unable to hold a sanitizer level.
Use a reliable drop-test kit when possible. Test free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and CYA at least two or three times per week during summer. When free chlorine is low, do not immediately dump in multiple products. First check the pH and CYA. Chlorine is less effective when pH climbs too high, while excessive CYA can make the sanitizer sluggish and require higher chlorine targets. Lancaster’s hard water also contributes to scaling, especially when pH and calcium hardness are allowed to rise together. Scale can collect inside a salt cell, heater, or circulation equipment.
Add chlorine with the pump running and pour liquid chlorine slowly in front of a return jet. Never mix liquid chlorine with muriatic acid, and do not combine different chlorine products in the same container or feeder. Granular calcium hypochlorite can increase calcium hardness, which may create additional scaling in our desert water. Trichlor tablets add CYA over time, so relying on them year-round can eventually produce a “chlorine lock” situation where the pool needs a much higher free chlorine level to remain effective.
Dose according to the product strength and pool volume. As a rough example, in a 10,000-gallon pool, 10% liquid chlorine raises free chlorine by roughly 10 PPM per gallon, though actual results vary by product age and concentration. A 1 PPM adjustment is therefore about 13 fluid ounces of that product. Measure carefully, allow circulation, and retest rather than making several large additions at once. A test result is more useful than a guess based on how blue the water looks.
For a pool that falls to zero chlorine, develops a strong “chlorine” smell, or turns cloudy after heavy use, a controlled oxidation treatment may be necessary. The goal is to remove organic demand and combined chlorine—not simply create an extreme chlorine spike. We check the chemistry first and allow swimmers back only when the water is clear and chemical levels are safe.
Equipment Check: Mark your clean filter pressure on the equipment pad. When the gauge rises 20–25% above that number, clean or backwash the filter so your returns can distribute chlorine throughout the pool.
A sanitizer cannot work properly if the water is not circulating. During hot weather, run the pump long enough to turn over the pool water adequately, often eight to twelve hours per day depending on pool size and equipment. Variable-speed pumps from Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward can reduce operating cost while maintaining longer circulation periods at lower speed.
Inspect the filter pressure weekly. A sand or cartridge filter loaded with dust from Lancaster and Littlerock winds may restrict flow and reduce the distribution of chlorine. Clean or backwash it according to the filter type and pressure rise recommended by the manufacturer—usually after the pressure climbs about 20–25% above the clean starting pressure. Salt-cell owners should inspect for scale and confirm that the cell is producing chlorine rather than assuming the display means everything is working.
