They are convenient, but CYA accumulates because it does not evaporate or get consumed like chlorine. It leaves the pool primarily through splash-out, backwashing, draining, or a deliberate water exchange.

For example, a standard 3-inch trichlor tablet is not just a source of chlorine. As it dissolves, it also adds stabilizer. A covered pool with little splash-out may slowly build CYA for months or years, especially when an automatic chlorinator is kept at a high setting. Switch to an unstabilized chlorine source, such as liquid sodium hypochlorite, or use calcium hypochlorite only after checking calcium hardness.
