Our local water contains a significant amount of dissolved calcium and other minerals, and evaporation concentrates those minerals even further. With summer temperatures reaching 110°F or more, a pool can lose several inches of water in a week. Every gallon that evaporates leaves its calcium behind.
The result is often a white, gray, or tan crust along the tile waterline, inside the skimmer, around return fittings, and on spillways. Calcium carbonate scale can also form inside heaters, salt chlorine generators, pumps, filters, and plumbing. High winds make the problem worse by blowing sand, dust, and tumbleweeds into the pool. That debris raises the demand for chlorine and can contribute to water balance problems when homeowners repeatedly add fresh water without adjusting the chemistry.
The first step is testing—not guessing. Total hardness, or calcium hardness, is measured in parts per million (PPM). For most plaster or pebble-finish pools, we generally aim for approximately 200 to 400 PPM, depending on the surface, water temperature, and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Vinyl and fiberglass pools may tolerate a different range, but excessively low calcium can also be damaging. Water that is too aggressive may pull calcium from plaster and grout, while water that is too hard is more likely to deposit scale.

Calcium hardness is only one part of the scale equation. When the water is scale-forming, the LSI is positive. In practical terms, high pH and high alkalinity can turn moderately hard water into a serious scaling problem.
For routine operation, many Antelope Valley pools perform well with a pH of 7.4 to 7.6 and total alkalinity around 80 to 120 PPM, although the correct targets depend on the sanitizer system and pool finish. Saltwater pools often need closer attention because aeration at the cell and naturally rising pH can encourage calcium deposits. A salt cell coated with scale may produce less chlorine, run hotter, or shut down with a warning even when the cell is otherwise functional.
Avoid making large, untested chemical corrections. Adding acid lowers pH, but it does not remove calcium from the water. Repeatedly pouring acid into a pool can drive alkalinity too low, damage plaster, and create a cycle of unstable chemistry. Likewise, adding a scale-control product cannot dissolve thick, established deposits on tile. These products may help keep dissolved minerals in suspension, but they are prevention tools—not a substitute for physical decalcification or proper water replacement.
Test the pool at least weekly during the swimming season and after major water additions. A professional test is especially useful when the pool has a salt system, heater, water feature, or visible deposits. Keep the waterline clean, brush the tile regularly, and remove leaves, sand, and Joshua tree debris before they break down in the water.
Control evaporation where practical. A properly fitted cover can reduce water loss, though it must be used safely and maintained. When adding water, test the source water first. If your fill water has high hardness, a hose-end prefilter or exchange tank can reduce the mineral load during partial fills. These filters are not a permanent solution for an already hard pool, but they can be useful during repeated top-offs.
If calcium hardness is already excessive, dilution is usually the dependable correction. That may mean a partial drain and refill or, in severe cases, a professional drain and acid-wash evaluation. Draining a pool in the Antelope Valley should not be treated as a casual weekend project. Groundwater, soil conditions, pool construction, and hydrostatic pressure all matter. A qualified contractor can determine whether the pool can be safely drained and how much water should be replaced.
Keep equipment protected by checking the heater, salt cell, pump basket, filter pressure, and water chemistry together. Never use household toilet-bowl cleaner, muriatic acid, or abrasive pads directly on pool tile without knowing the material and the required safety controls.
