Metals may be present in municipal water, well water, or water delivered by a truck. The water can look perfectly clear coming from the hose because iron and copper are dissolved and invisible. Once chlorine oxidizes those metals, they can turn into colored particles that attach to plaster, pebble, tile, steps, or vinyl surfaces.
Iron commonly produces yellow, orange, or rust-brown discoloration. Copper may create blue-green stains, and in some cases a green tint on light plaster. Manganese can leave dark brown, gray, or nearly black marks. Water chemistry determines what happens next. A pH that rises above approximately 7.6, high calcium hardness, or a sudden increase in chlorine can make precipitation and staining more likely.
Hard water is already a concern in the Antelope Valley. Evaporation leaves calcium and dissolved minerals behind, so topping off a pool repeatedly can gradually increase the total mineral load. A pool in Rosamond, Littlerock, Pearblossom, or Acton may also have a different water profile than a pool a few miles away, particularly when a private well or hauled water is involved.
Not every green pool is an algae problem, either. If the water is clear but the walls or steps are greenish, copper is worth testing before adding more algaecide. Some algaecides contain copper and can make an existing metal problem worse.
The first step is a complete water analysis, not a guess based on color. We recommend testing free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, salt when applicable, and metals including iron and copper. Manganese may also be important when the discoloration is dark or the property uses well water.
For general pool balance, free chlorine is often maintained around 2 to 4 parts per million (PPM), though the correct level depends on cyanuric acid and the type of pool. pH should normally remain between 7.2 and 7.8, with 7.4 to 7.6 being a practical target for many residential pools. Total alkalinity commonly falls in the 80 to 120 PPM range, while calcium hardness should be evaluated based on the surface and local water—not treated as a one-size-fits-all number.
A simple bucket test can offer a clue: add a small amount of fresh water to a clean white container, then compare it before and after a controlled chlorine addition. However, this is not a substitute for a proper metal test. We also examine the stain itself. A vitamin C tablet can lighten some iron stains, while a dry acid test or professional stain kit may help distinguish metals from scale or organic growth. Do not aggressively scrub a plaster surface until the cause is known; that can damage the finish without removing the metal.
Equipment Check: Mark your filter’s clean starting pressure. When the gauge rises 8 to 10 PSI above that number, clean or backwash the filter so oxidized metal particles are removed instead of circulating back through the pool.
For dissolved metals, a quality sequestrant can keep iron and copper suspended in the water so they are less likely to plate onto the pool surface. Products based on phosphonic acid or phosphonate chemistry are commonly used, but they are not permanent removers. UV exposure, chlorine, and regular oxidation gradually break them down, so maintenance doses are often necessary—particularly in the Antelope Valley sun.
Follow the product label and base the dose on the pool’s gallons and measured metal concentration. Adding extra sequestrant does not automatically work faster and can create unnecessary water-quality complications. If a fresh fill is known to be metal-rich, the sequestrant should generally be added before or immediately after filling, then circulation should run continuously while the water is monitored.
Filtration is important after treatment. A clean cartridge filter, sand filter, or properly maintained DE filter can remove precipitated metal particles. Cartridge filters should be cleaned when pressure rises roughly 8 to 10 PSI above the clean starting pressure. A DE filter needs correct backwashing or cleaning and fresh DE powder afterward. Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward systems all work well when sized and maintained correctly; none can compensate for a severely loaded or bypassing filter.
Established stains may require a professional stain-removal treatment, acid-free chemistry, or—on certain surfaces—a carefully controlled acid wash. Acid washing removes a thin layer of plaster and is not appropriate for every pool, especially older finishes. Typical professional stain treatment may run about $150 to $500 depending on pool size, chemistry, and severity. A full drain, treatment, and refill can cost considerably more and should not be considered until less invasive options are evaluated.
Start with the source water. If you use a private well or water delivery, have that water tested before filling. A hose-end carbon filter may reduce some contaminants, but many basic filters are not designed to remove dissolved iron, copper, or manganese. For repeated problems, a professional may recommend pre-filtering, reverse osmosis, or a whole-property treatment system based on laboratory results.
Avoid adding untreated top-off water immediately before a high-chlorine shock. Fill gradually when possible, keep circulation running, and check pH before raising chlorine. Maintain a clean filter and inspect automatic water-level devices, because a small leak can cause constant makeup water and steadily concentrate minerals.

Remove debris promptly, brush regularly, and keep chlorine and pH stable instead of allowing the pool to swing between low sanitizer and aggressive shock treatments. Algae usually causes cloudy or dull water and responds to proper sanitation and brushing. A clear pool with localized blue-green staining, especially after a refill or copper-based algaecide, should be tested for copper before adding more chemicals.
A standard filter can remove metal particles after they precipitate, but it generally will not remove dissolved metals. A sequestrant, oxidation-and-filtration process, or source-water treatment may be needed depending on the test results.
