A properly balanced pool should generally hold free chlorine around 2-4 ppm, with pH at 7.4-7.6 and total alkalinity near 80-120 ppm. If the water is cloudy after a wind event, test before adding chemicals. Fine dust can pack into a skimmer basket and reduce water flow. Larger debris may also block the weir door, preventing the surface from feeding properly into the skimmer. Check that the water level is approximately halfway up the skimmer opening. Record the clean pressure after every filter cleaning. Pressure numbers vary by plumbing, pump speed, and equipment condition, so the number on a neighbor's gauge is not a useful comparison. If pressure climbs quickly after cleaning, look for excessive dust, a blocked return line, a dirty cartridge, or a pump operating at too high a speed. Equipment Check: If you see bubbles continuously building in the pump basket after a windstorm, inspect the pump-lid O-ring, suction valves, and water level. Air entering the suction side can reduce filtration and damage the pump.
Use a brush appropriate for the pool surface. Nylon bristles are suitable for most plaster and vinyl surfaces, while a stainless-steel combination brush may be used carefully on durable plaster when permitted by the finish manufacturer. Brush steps, benches, waterline tile, and the pool floor, paying special attention to corners where dust settles. Do not aggressively scrub a deteriorating or exposed-aggregate finish without professional advice.
Vacuuming is often the fastest way to remove a heavy layer of windblown dust. If the pool is severely dirty, vacuuming to waste can prevent the filter from loading immediately, but it also lowers the water level. A high cyanuric acid level can make chlorine less effective, while high calcium hardness combined with elevated pH can create scaling or a milky appearance that looks like dust. Do not mix acid, chlorine, or other chemicals in the same container. Add products separately according to the label and allow circulation between treatments.
For routine prevention, trim loose landscaping, secure pool covers, and keep gates and windbreaks in good condition. A cover can reduce dust entry, but it must be cleaned before removal; otherwise the collected dust simply washes into the pool. During the windiest part of spring and early summer, check baskets daily and inspect filter pressure every few days.
If the water remains cloudy after a complete filter cleaning, proper brushing, and balanced chemistry, the issue may be a damaged cartridge, insufficient DE, a failing multiport valve, poor circulation, or a filter that is undersized for the pool. A leaking valve can also send filtered water back to waste or allow dirty water to bypass the filter.
