That approach often fails in Palmdale because water chemistry is only one part of the problem. If the pump is not moving enough water, the filter is loaded with dirt, and the surfaces are coated with scale and algae, chemicals cannot correct the underlying conditions.
This Palmdale recovery case involved a backyard pool that had been left mostly unattended through multiple Antelope Valley summers. The water was dark green, visibility was nearly zero, and the pool contained leaves, sand, and tumbleweeds blown in during high-wind days. The homeowner had already added several gallons of liquid chlorine, but the water remained cloudy and the pump was running hot.

Summer temperatures can exceed 110°F, intense UV burns through chlorine quickly, and desert dust enters the pool through every gap in the equipment area and deck. The first step was to make the pool safe to work on and determine whether the water was hiding a structural or equipment problem. With no clear view of the floor, we could not assume the drain covers, lights, suction fittings, or pool surface were in good condition. Swimming was prohibited until visibility and chemistry were restored.
We inspected the pump basket, skimmer, suction lines, return flow, filter pressure, valves, and equipment pad. The pool had weak circulation caused by a clogged pump basket and a sand filter that had not been properly backwashed for an extended period. The filter pressure was well above its clean starting pressure, which confirmed that water was bypassing normal filtration performance.
The pump also showed signs of overheating. On pools using Pentair, Jandy, or Hayward equipment, a noisy motor or unusually hot housing can indicate restricted flow, a failing seal, blocked impeller, or motor bearing wear. Running a damaged pump continuously during a cleanup can turn a maintenance job into a $700-to-$1,500 equipment replacement, depending on the motor and installation requirements.
A professional water test followed the mechanical inspection. We checked free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid, calcium hardness, and, when appropriate, phosphates. High calcium hardness is especially common in Antelope Valley water and can contribute to scale on tile, heaters, salt cells, and plaster.
The recovery started with physical debris removal. Skimmer baskets and the pump basket were cleaned, floating debris was removed, and the pool floor was vacuumed as visibility improved. We repaired the circulation problem before raising chlorine. Adding a large chemical dose to a pool that is barely circulating wastes product and can create highly concentrated pockets that damage liners, finishes, or equipment.
Once adequate flow was restored, the filter was cleaned according to its type. A cartridge filter was removed and thoroughly cleaned, while a sand or DE filter would require the correct backwash and recharge procedure. Filter pressure was recorded at the clean baseline so the homeowner could recognize when future cleaning was needed. In many cases, the filter should be cleaned when pressure rises 8 to 10 PSI above that baseline.
The chemistry was then adjusted in stages. The target operating range after recovery was generally 2 to 4 parts per million (PPM) free chlorine, pH between 7.4 and 7.6, and total alkalinity around 80 to 120 PPM. Cyanuric acid was checked before shocking because excessive CYA can make chlorine appear ineffective. For a standard chlorine pool, CYA is commonly maintained around 30 to 50 PPM; saltwater pools often operate closer to 60 to 80 PPM, depending on the manufacturer and local conditions.
A controlled chlorine treatment was used to eliminate active algae, followed by continuous circulation, brushing, and filtration. Chlorine demand was retested rather than guessed. If combined chlorine remained elevated, additional treatment was considered. We avoided blindly adding clarifier or algaecide, since those products do not replace proper sanitizer levels or adequate filtration.
Equipment Check: Write down your clean filter pressure after each complete cleaning. When the gauge rises 8 to 10 PSI above that number, circulation is usually restricted and the filter needs attention.
Once the pool was clear enough to inspect, the second layer of problems became visible. The waterline tile had a hard calcium ring, the plaster had areas of discoloration, and the skimmer throat showed cracking that could allow leaks or reduce suction. The equipment pad also had a slow drip near a union and a worn pump lid O-ring.
Not every stained surface requires acid washing. Acid washing removes a thin layer of plaster and should not be used as a routine cleaning method, especially on an already aging finish. Depending on the surface, the better option may be a pumice treatment, tile cleaning, stain evaluation, or resurfacing consultation. Minor equipment repairs, such as O-rings, lids, unions, or pressure gauges, may cost approximately $100 to $350. Larger repairs, including a pump, filter, heater component, or automation replacement, can range from $500 to several thousand dollars.
After repairs, the pool was balanced and operated on a consistent schedule. The homeowner was advised to brush walls weekly, empty baskets before they restrict flow, and check the filter pressure every few days during dusty weather. In Palmdale and Lancaster, a pool can need more frequent skimming after a high-wind event than it does during an entire calm week.
The important lesson from this recovery is that clear water is not the same as a healthy pool. Safe operation also requires visible drains and fittings, dependable circulation, a functional filter, sound electrical and suction components, and stable chemistry.
