We adjusted pH gradually with muriatic acid, bringing it into the 7.2-to-7.4 range. We did not make one oversized acid addition. The objective was not to chase a perfect number immediately; it was to keep the saturation balance slightly protective without making the water aggressive.

For the first several days, the homeowner brushed the entire pool twice daily with a manufacturer-approved brush. This included the steps, benches, tile line, floor, and areas around returns. Brushing helps remove plaster dust and distributes any loose material so the filter can capture it. We also avoided floating chlorine tablets, which can create concentrated acidic water around the finish and leave stains or discoloration.

After the initial dust period, calcium hardness was checked again. The reading had increased modestly, so we kept pH near 7.4 to 7.6 and monitored total alkalinity weekly. For many new plaster or quartz finishes, a practical long-term calcium hardness target is approximately 250 to 350 PPM, but the correct number depends on the finish manufacturer, water temperature, and complete Langelier Saturation Index calculation.

We monitored the saturation index rather than relying on one test result. In general, the water was kept slightly negative during the early curing period, roughly around -0.3 to 0.0, avoiding both aggressive water that can etch the finish and positive water that can form scale. Temperature matters: hot Palmdale water becomes more scale-prone as summer temperatures rise.

The salt chlorine generator remained off until the startup period was complete and the finish manufacturer’s requirements were met. Once salt was added and dissolved, the Pentair system could be commissioned normally.
