Our desert water is naturally hard, and summer temperatures above 110°F drive rapid evaporation. As water leaves the pool, calcium and other dissolved minerals remain behind and become more concentrated.
That combination of hard water, intense UV, high winds, and frequent water loss creates ideal conditions for calcium deposits. A little roughness on the tile can turn into a thick white or gray crust that is difficult to remove and may restrict skimmer doors, damage grout, and shorten the life of heaters and salt systems.
Pro Tip: Have your calcium hardness and CSI checked before adding calcium increaser. Lancaster and Palmdale fill water is often already hard enough, and unnecessary calcium makes future scaling more likely.
Calcium scale forms when the water's calcium hardness and overall saturation level become too high. Calcium hardness is measured in parts per million, or ppm. For most plaster and pebble-finish pools, we generally look for approximately 200 to 400 ppm, although the correct range depends on the surface, source water, and overall water balance.
Hardness is only part of the picture. The Langelier Saturation Index, commonly called the CSI, also considers pH, total alkalinity, temperature, and calcium hardness. When the CSI rises above roughly +0.3, the water is more likely to deposit calcium carbonate on tile, plaster, plumbing, and equipment. A pool can develop scale even when a homeowner sees an acceptable calcium reading if the pH, alkalinity, or water temperature is consistently too high.
Lancaster and Palmdale pools are especially vulnerable because evaporation is extreme. Wind blows sand, tumbleweeds, and fine dust into the water, while pool owners often add makeup water from a hard municipal or well-water source. Each refill introduces more minerals. A leaking autofill, cracked plumbing line, or small shell leak can make the cycle even worse by constantly replacing evaporated water.
The earliest sign is usually a gritty, chalky band at the waterline. It may appear white, tan, gray, or slightly yellow depending on the water chemistry and contaminants mixed into the deposit. If you can feel a rough edge with your fingernail, ordinary dirt is probably not the only issue.

A white ring is not always calcium carbonate. In some pools, the deposit includes silicate, salt, organic residue, or metals. Acid spot tests can help identify some deposits, but homeowners should use caution. Acid can etch cement grout, discolor natural stone, damage polished finishes, and create a dangerous vapor if handled incorrectly. A professional inspection is worthwhile when the deposit is heavy or the tile is expensive.
Equipment Check: Inspect the salt cell, heater inlet, and return fittings whenever you see scale at the waterline. Deposits in those areas can reduce flow and efficiency before an equipment failure becomes obvious.
Light deposits may respond to careful brushing with a nylon or approved tile brush while the water is properly balanced. Avoid aggressive wire brushes on glass, ceramic, or delicate grout. Household pumice stones are also risky; they can scratch tile and plaster if used on the wrong surface or with too much pressure.
For established scale, professional tile decalcification is usually the safest and most effective option. Depending on the tile and deposit, a technician may use a controlled abrasive process, specialized media, or a targeted treatment designed to remove calcium without unnecessarily damaging the finish. Glass bead or similar media can work well on suitable tile, but nozzle pressure, media selection, and operator technique matter. Natural stone, glass tile, painted surfaces, and older grout each require a different approach.
If scaling has reached the heater, salt chlorine generator, or circulation plumbing, cleaning the tile alone will not solve the problem. A salt cell may require manufacturer-approved cleaning, and a heater can need a chemical flush or internal inspection. Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward equipment all have specific service requirements; overusing muriatic acid can shorten component life and void some manufacturer protections.
In severe cases, draining and acid washing may be discussed, but acid washing is not a routine calcium-scale solution. It removes a thin layer of plaster and can leave an already-aged surface more porous. We evaluate the pool finish, deposit type, and equipment condition before recommending that step. Typical professional tile decalcification may cost roughly $400 to $1,200 depending on pool size, tile design, access, and the thickness of the scale. Equipment cleaning or repairs are priced separately after inspection.
Removing deposits is only half the job. The water must be managed afterward so the scale does not return within a few months. Keep pH generally between 7.2 and 7.6, and test total alkalinity and calcium hardness instead of relying only on a basic chlorine strip. Many plaster pools run well with alkalinity around 80 to 120 ppm, while some saltwater pools benefit from a carefully managed lower range based on their CSI.
Do not automatically add calcium increaser. Antelope Valley source water often supplies plenty of calcium already. If hardness is excessively high, partial drain-and-refill with properly treated water may be more useful than repeated chemical adjustments. A pool professional can calculate the CSI and determine whether dilution, acid demand correction, aeration, or regular testing is the appropriate solution.
Keep chlorine in the normal operating range for the pool type, usually around 2 to 4 ppm for many residential pools, and maintain stabilizer appropriately. High pH is the most common day-to-day scale trigger. Check pH at least twice weekly during the hottest months and after major water additions. Clean the tile before deposits become thick, keep the water level consistent, and repair leaking autofills promptly.
