Free chlorine: Maintain approximately 2 to 4 parts per million (ppm) in a standard residential pool. During extreme heat or after heavy use, chlorine demand may increase. If free chlorine repeatedly falls to zero between visits, investigate circulation, stabilizer level, cyanuric acid, and possible algae growth instead of simply adding larger doses of chlorine.
pH: The practical target is 7.4 to 7.6, with an acceptable operating range of 7.2 to 7.8. High pH is common in the Antelope Valley because of hard fill water, evaporation, plaster curing, and aeration from spillways or water features. Persistent readings above 7.8 can reduce chlorine effectiveness and encourage scale on tile, salt cells, heaters, and return fittings.
Total alkalinity: Aim for roughly 80 to 120 ppm in most residential pools. Alkalinity acts as the water's pH buffer. If it is too high, pH tends to drift upward and resist correction. If it is too low, pH can swing rapidly and become corrosive to metal components and pool finishes.
Cyanuric acid: Usually keep stabilizer around 30 to 50 ppm for a traditionally chlorinated pool. Saltwater pools may operate near 60 to 80 ppm, depending on the equipment manufacturer's recommendations. Too little stabilizer allows the Antelope Valley sun to destroy chlorine quickly. Too much can make chlorine less effective and may require partial draining to correct.
Calcium hardness: A common target is 200 to 400 ppm, although the ideal range depends on the finish and equipment. Rosamond's hard water can push calcium hardness higher over time as evaporation concentrates minerals. High calcium, high pH, and warm water create the conditions for scale. Log calcium hardness monthly or whenever water is added in significant amounts.
Salt level, when applicable: Saltwater chlorine generators from Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward have specific operating ranges. Record the actual salt reading, not just the display message. A rising salt level can indicate evaporation and refill patterns, while a low reading may point to dilution, a testing difference, or a cell that needs inspection.
Also note water level, filter pressure, pump schedule, chemical additions, and unusual conditions such as a dust storm, pool party, heavy rain, or a visible water feature leak.
