Before cleaning, remove furniture, toys, planters, and loose debris. Sweep or blow the deck first, but be careful with high-powered blowers around open pool water; they can send a surprising amount of sand into the pool. Cover or wet nearby landscaping, especially young trees, ornamental grasses, and Joshua trees that may be sensitive to concentrated cleaning chemicals.
For standard broom-finished or stamped concrete, a low-pressure detergent wash followed by controlled rinsing is usually safer than immediately using maximum pressure. A pressure washer set around 1,500 to 2,500 PSI may be appropriate for sound concrete, but the operator must keep the nozzle moving and maintain a consistent distance. Excessive pressure can expose aggregate, scar the surface, strip a decorative coating, or force water beneath a failing sealer.
Pavers require additional care. High pressure can remove joint sand and leave pavers rocking underfoot. Clean them with a surface cleaner or fan tip at moderate pressure, then replace polymeric or joint sand as needed. If the pavers have white haze, that may be efflorescence rather than ordinary dirt. A mild specialty efflorescence remover is preferable to aggressive muriatic acid, and it should be tested in an inconspicuous area first.
Tile coping, grout, and natural stone should be treated more gently. Calcium scale may require a non-abrasive descaler, pumice used only on compatible tile, or professional bead/media blasting. Never assume a kitchen-style acid cleaner is safe for travertine, limestone, marble, colored grout, or metal fittings. Acid can etch stone, lighten grout, corrode fixtures, and damage nearby plants. It can also wash into the pool and lower alkalinity unexpectedly.
For pool water, keep the chemistry stable while cleaning. A typical residential pool should generally maintain free chlorine around 2β4 PPM and pH between 7.2 and 7.8, though the proper target depends on the sanitizer system and stabilizer level. If deck runoff introduces a large amount of dust or chemical residue, test pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness afterward rather than guessing. Lancaster's hard water commonly contributes to scaling when calcium hardness, pH, and evaporation are all working against you.
