Cartridge filters use pleated fabric cartridges to trap debris. They are common on residential pools because they do not require a backwash line and usually operate at lower water consumption. In the Antelope Valley, cartridges often need a thorough hose cleaning two to four times per year, with additional cleaning after dust storms, algae treatment, or construction nearby.
Remove the cartridges and rinse from the top downward, keeping the spray at an angle so debris is pushed out of the pleats instead of driven deeper into the fabric. A garden hose is usually safer than a pressure washer, which can damage the material. Cartridge cleaning may cost roughly $125–$225 locally, depending on filter size and access. If the fabric is torn, crushed, permanently gray with embedded debris, or the filter pressure rises unusually fast after cleaning, replacement is usually more sensible. Replacement cartridge sets commonly run from about $300 to $900 or more.
Sand filters clean water by passing it through graded filter sand. They are durable and relatively simple, but they require backwashing when the pressure gauge reads approximately 8–10 PSI above the clean starting pressure. For example, if the filter runs at 14 PSI after a proper cleaning, backwash around 22–24 PSI. Always follow the valve manufacturer’s instructions and finish with a short rinse cycle before returning to filter mode.
Backwashing too frequently wastes water and can prevent the sand bed from filtering effectively. Backwashing does not remove all contaminants, and it does not correct poor chemistry. The sand itself is commonly changed about every 3–7 years, sooner if it has hardened, channeled, or become rounded and ineffective. Sand replacement often falls around $500–$1,000, depending on the tank size, plumbing, and access. A damaged lateral assembly or multiport valve can add to that cost.
DE, or diatomaceous earth, filters provide the finest filtration of the three and can produce exceptionally clear water. They use DE powder coating internal grids or a grid assembly. After every backwash, the correct amount of fresh DE must be added through the skimmer according to the manufacturer’s label. Running a DE filter without enough powder can damage the grid fabric and reduce filtration.
A full DE cleaning—removing the manifold or grids, rinsing them, inspecting for tears, and recharging with the correct DE—may be needed every 6–12 months, or sooner after an algae cleanup. Never discharge DE into a storm drain. Local disposal rules and the equipment setup matter. DE service commonly costs about $150–$300, while grid replacement can range from $300 to $900 depending on the model and parts availability.
