A variable-speed pump can help by running at a lower speed for everyday filtration, then increasing speed only for vacuuming or water features. The most useful pressure reading is the clean-start pressure. After cleaning a cartridge or backwashing a sand filter, run the pump normally and record the pressure shown on the filter gauge. Every pool is different, so a clean pressure might be 12 PSI on one system and 22 PSI on another. The number itself is less important than the change from the clean baseline.
A pressure increase of about 8 to 10 PSI above the clean reading usually means the filter is loaded and should be cleaned. Some manufacturers specify a different threshold, so the filter label and owner’s manual take priority. For instance, if a clean cartridge filter runs at 16 PSI, plan to clean it around 24 to 26 PSI rather than waiting until the water becomes cloudy.
When cleaning a cartridge, shut off power at the breaker or disconnect, release filter pressure, remove the element, and rinse between the pleats with a moderate-pressure hose. A pressure washer can damage the fabric and force dirt deeper into the media. For oily buildup, sunscreen, or scale, use a cartridge-filter cleaner according to the product directions. Lancaster’s hard water can leave calcium deposits that a simple rinse will not remove.
Sand filters should be backwashed until the discharge water clears, then placed in rinse mode for the manufacturer’s recommended time before returning to filter. Never change a multiport valve position while the pump is running. After any cleaning, check for leaks, confirm the pressure gauge returns near its baseline, and verify that return jets have normal flow.
Equipment Check: Write the clean pressure on a piece of tape inside the equipment panel. Compare every future reading with that baseline, and replace a stuck or fogged pressure gauge before using it to schedule filter cleaning.
A cartridge element may need replacement when pleats are torn, end caps are cracked, the fabric stays permanently gray after cleaning, or pressure rises rapidly again within days. In Antelope Valley service conditions, a good cartridge commonly lasts around three to five years, although heavy dust, poor chemical balance, and infrequent cleaning can shorten that considerably. Sand filter media commonly lasts five to seven years. It may need replacement sooner if the sand is clumped by scale, channeling is visible, filtration remains poor after backwashing, or the filter returns debris through the pool returns.
