Not every dark spot is algae. Pool stains usually come from metals, organic debris, or a surface chemistry problem.
Metal stains: Iron can leave yellow, brown, or rust-colored marks, while copper may create blue-green stains or even turn light-colored hair and plaster green. Metals can enter through well water, corroded heaters, low-pH conditions, or some algaecides. If a stain appears shortly after adding water, test for iron and copper before brushing aggressively.
Organic stains: Leaves, Joshua tree needles, pollen, dirt, and tumbleweeds can sit on the pool floor and release tannins. These stains are often brown or greenish and may respond to chlorine and brushing, but leaving debris in the pool for days allows it to discolor plaster and grout.
High calcium and poor balance: Scale commonly appears as a white, rough deposit along the waterline, tile, spillways, and inside salt cells. In Acton and nearby communities such as Quartz Hill, Lancaster, and Palmdale, hard fill water can make calcium buildup develop faster—especially when evaporation concentrates minerals.
A stain test is important before treatment. Applying the wrong product can set a metal stain deeper into plaster or damage tile and grout. Professional technicians may use small spot tests, sequestrant evaluation, or mineral testing to identify the source before choosing an acid treatment, stain remover, or chelating product.
