The three measurements that matter most for protecting plaster, tile, grout, and equipment are pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness. They do not operate independently. A pool may show an acceptable pH on a test strip while still having a water balance problem that slowly damages the surface.

Calcium that is too low can pull minerals from cement-based surfaces, causing etching and roughness. Calcium that is too high, combined with elevated pH and warm water, can create scale on tile, plaster, salt cells, filters, and heat exchangers.
Antelope Valley water is naturally mineral-heavy, and every gallon lost to evaporation leaves those minerals behind. If a Lancaster pool drops several inches during a hot week and is topped off with hard municipal water, calcium concentration can gradually climb. That can create an overcorrected pool: high pH, excessive alkalinity, or calcium levels that make the original problem worse.

When the water is scale-forming, calcium deposits commonly appear first at the waterline. They may look like a thin white ring, but repeated deposits can become hard, chalky buildup on glass tile, ceramic tile, grout, and coping. Saltwater pools can be especially prone to visible waterline scale when pH is allowed to remain high. A salt chlorine generator cell may also develop calcium plates that reduce chlorine production and shorten cell life.
Scale inside a heater’s heat exchanger acts like insulation. The heater must run longer to transfer the same amount of heat, increasing energy use and potentially causing overheating. Depending on the equipment and access, heater repairs or heat-exchanger replacement can cost several hundred to well over $1,500. Replacing a salt cell can also cost roughly $700 to $1,500 installed, so preventing scale is far less expensive than ignoring it.
On the opposite side, water with low pH or insufficient calcium can become aggressive. It may etch plaster, dissolve grout, and leave a rough texture that collects algae and dirt. Once a finish is physically etched, adjusting the chemistry will stop further damage but will not restore the original surface. Minor tile calcium buildup may be removable with professional tile decalcification, while severe deposits or damaged grout may require more involved restoration.
Test pH and sanitizer at least two or three times per week during the summer, and test alkalinity and calcium hardness monthly or whenever water is added in large quantities. Use a quality drop-based test kit or have a pool professional verify results. Test strips are useful for a quick warning, but they can be difficult to read accurately in strong sunlight and often do not provide dependable calcium hardness readings.
Make adjustments in the correct order. First, correct alkalinity when it is significantly out of range. Then bring pH to approximately 7.4 to 7.6. Calcium hardness usually requires dilution with partial drain-and-refill or a professional treatment when it is too high; adding more chemicals will not remove excess calcium. Never mix muriatic acid with chlorine products, and add chemicals according to the product label with the circulation system operating.
Keep the water moving and clean the pool after windy days. Brush the tile line, empty baskets, clean the filter when pressure rises about 20 to 25 percent above its clean starting pressure, and inspect salt cells or heater areas for scale. If you see recurring white deposits, cloudy water that will not clear, or a rough waterline, schedule an evaluation before the buildup becomes permanent.
