The filter is the pool's primary mechanical cleaning component. Cartridge filters trap debris in pleated media and are convenient for many residential systems, but they must be removed and thoroughly cleaned when pressure rises or the cartridges become loaded. Sand filters capture particles in the filter bed and require proper backwashing and rinsing. Diatomaceous earth, or DE, filters can capture very fine material, but they need the correct amount of DE after cleaning and must be handled according to manufacturer requirements.
A pressure gauge is one of the most useful indicators of filter condition. The clean starting pressure should be recorded after a proper cleaning. When operating pressure rises roughly 8 to 10 PSI above that baseline, the filter may be loaded and restricting flow. The exact service point depends on the equipment and manufacturer, but ignoring pressure increases can reduce circulation and make the pump work harder.
Circulation determines whether dusty water actually reaches the filter. A pump may be running while dead spots remain in corners, behind ladders, near steps, or along the floor. Return jets should be adjusted to create a broad, rotating flow pattern rather than sending all movement straight across the surface. Run time may need to increase during windy periods, heavy pool use, or extreme heat. A qualified technician should also verify that the pump basket, skimmer basket, valves, and suction lines are not restricting flow.
Good circulation does not mean every particle disappears immediately. It means suspended material has repeated opportunities to reach the skimmer and filter instead of settling into a layer on the pool surface.
