If you own a pool in Quartz Hill, you have probably seen a white or gray ring forming along the waterline. In most cases, that crust is calcium carbonate scale—a mineral deposit left behind as pool water evaporates. It is especially common in the Antelope Valley because our water is naturally hard, summer temperatures can exceed 110°F, and strong UV exposure drives rapid evaporation.
Every time water disappears from the pool, the minerals remain behind. Topping off with hard municipal or well water adds more calcium. High pH makes the problem worse because calcium comes out of solution more readily as pH rises. A pool can look chemically “clear” while still building scale if the pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and water temperature are not kept in balance.
A normal target for many residential pools is a pH of 7.4 to 7.6, though the ideal range depends on the surface and sanitizer system. Total alkalinity is commonly maintained around 80 to 120 parts per million (PPM), while calcium hardness is often kept near 200 to 400 PPM for plaster pools. Saltwater pools, heaters, spillovers, and elevated water temperatures can require closer monitoring. In Lancaster, Palmdale, and Quartz Hill, windblown sand and dust also introduce contaminants that make tile lines look dirty faster than they would in many other areas.
