Accurate testing determines how much chlorine the pool can use and whether another problem is preventing recovery. Test free chlorine (FC), combined chlorine (CC), pH, total alkalinity (TA), and cyanuric acid (CYA). Calcium hardness is also worth checking in Lancaster, Palmdale, and Quartz Hill because Antelope Valley water is often hard, commonly around 250 to 500 ppm or higher depending on the neighborhood and supply.
For a cleanup, pH should generally be adjusted to approximately 7.2 to 7.4 before raising chlorine. Chlorine is more effective at the lower end of the normal pH range, and a green pool often has a misleadingly high pH reading because algae and contamination have disturbed the water balance. Avoid blindly adding acid, however; confirm the test result first.
CYA matters because it protects chlorine from the region's intense UV exposure but also determines the free chlorine level needed for an effective algae treatment. For example, a pool with CYA around 40 ppm may need to be maintained near 16 ppm FC during an aggressive cleanup. A pool with CYA of 90 or 100 ppm requires substantially more chlorine, and draining or partially replacing water may be more practical than continuing to add chemicals.
Never mix chlorine products with muriatic acid, algaecide, or any other chemical in a bucket or feeder. Add products separately, with the pump running, and follow the label. If the water is so opaque that you cannot see the shallow end, or if the pool has an attached spa, salt system, heater, or delicate surface, calling a licensed pool professional is the safer choice.
