Do not allow the water level to fall below the tile line for extended periods. Exposed plaster can dry unevenly and develop a visible waterline ring. Keep the pool circulating, clean the filter regularly, and brush the walls when dust or early scale begins collecting. Equipment Check: Have the pump, filter, heater, salt cell, autofill, and lights checked while the pool is empty. Replacing a failed light niche or leaking fitting during resurfacing is far less disruptive than cutting into a new finish later.
The first 28 to 30 days after plastering are critical. Follow the applicator's written startup procedure, which commonly includes continuous circulation, frequent brushing with an appropriate brush, regular water testing, and careful pH and alkalinity adjustment. The exact chlorine instructions vary by startup method, so do not add a large dose of chemicals simply because the water looks cloudy. Never use a robotic cleaner, heater, salt system, or automatic chemical dosing program until the installer says the new surface is ready.
After startup, test at least twice a week during the swimming season and more often during heat waves. Maintain a clean filter—especially when Lancaster winds are blowing—and empty baskets before restricted flow causes the pump to run poorly. Avoid letting pH stay above 8.0, and do not pour acid directly onto the plaster. Acid washing can temporarily brighten a stained surface, but repeated acid treatments remove cement and shorten the finish's useful life.
Salt systems are compatible with plaster, but they do not eliminate maintenance. Salt pools still require proper free chlorine, pH control, stabilizer, and periodic calcium and alkalinity testing. A leaking autofill, neglected pool cover, failing heater, or improperly adjusted water-level sensor can also create chemistry problems. If you see rough patches, white scale, persistent gray mottling, or plaster dust months after startup, have the surface and water balance evaluated before trying aggressive chemicals.
