Saltwater pools still use chlorine; the salt cell simply produces it. Salt systems often perform well with free chlorine around 3 to 5 PPM, but the manufacturer’s specifications matter. A salt cell cannot overcome poor circulation or a pool that is losing chlorine to algae.

Run time also matters. During the hottest part of the season, many Agua Dulce pools need roughly 8 to 12 hours of daily circulation, although the correct schedule depends on pool volume, pump speed, plumbing, and bather load. Variable-speed pumps from Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward can save electricity when programmed correctly. A low-speed filtration period followed by a higher-speed skimming period is often more efficient than running one high-speed block all day.
Do not ignore the filter pressure gauge. If pressure rises about 8 to 10 PSI above the clean starting pressure, the filter needs service. Cartridge filters may need a thorough cleaning; sand filters may need backwashing; DE filters need backwashing and fresh diatomaceous earth according to the equipment instructions. A filter that is never cleaned can restrict flow and increase pump stress. A repair to a failing pump seal, pressure-side cleaner, or valve may cost a few hundred dollars, but replacing chemicals every week can quietly cost just as much over a season.
Equipment Check: Write down your clean filter pressure after service. When the gauge rises 8 to 10 PSI above that number, clean or backwash the filter rather than compensating with extra chemicals.
The most economical chemical is the debris you remove before it enters the water. Skim leaves, seed pods, insects, and tumbleweeds promptly. Brush walls and steps at least weekly, and vacuum areas where fine dust settles. In Lancaster, Palmdale, Quartz Hill, and Agua Dulce, wind can deposit a surprising amount of soil overnight. Leaving that material in the pool gives algae and bacteria a food source and increases filter loading.
