Low-pH water may irritate swimmers, attack metal components, and contribute to plaster or grout deterioration over time. It can also make a chlorine reading appear difficult to manage because the water chemistry is unstable.

When alkalinity is too high, pH tends to drift upward and resist correction. Adjusting Total Alkalinity Correctly

The chemical used to raise total alkalinity is usually sodium bicarbonate, commonly sold as alkalinity increaser or baking soda. It raises alkalinity with a smaller effect on pH than soda ash. Additions should be based on the pool’s tested volume and the product label. Do not guess by pouring in an entire bag; overshooting alkalinity can create weeks of unnecessary pH corrections.

To lower total alkalinity, pool professionals use muriatic acid, also called hydrochloric acid. Acid lowers both pH and alkalinity, so the process requires patience. We add a measured dose with the circulation system operating, allow the water to mix, then retest. If alkalinity still needs to come down, the process is repeated. Some technicians use controlled aeration between acid doses—raising pH with air while leaving alkalinity lower—to reach the target without repeatedly over-acidifying the pool.

Never mix muriatic acid with chlorine, either in a measuring container or near chemical storage. Wear eye and skin protection, work outdoors, and follow the label. Acid fumes can damage nearby metal, pool equipment, and landscaping. If you are not certain of the pool’s gallons or the current chemistry, a professional adjustment is safer than trying to correct a large imbalance all at once.

After an adjustment, run the pump long enough to distribute the chemical and retest. In a typical residential pool, give the water several hours to circulate before making another correction. Testing immediately at one return or skimmer can give a misleading result.
