Before adjusting anything, take a sample from elbow depth away from the return jets and skimmer. Test free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and stabilizer (cyanuric acid). Test strips can identify a general problem, but a quality drop test or professional test is much more dependable when the water is seriously cloudy.
For most residential pools, practical target ranges are:
- Free chlorine: 2β4 parts per million (ppm)
- Combined chlorine: below 0.5 ppm
- pH: 7.4β7.6, with 7.2β7.8 generally acceptable
- Total alkalinity: 80β120 ppm
- Calcium hardness: approximately 200β400 ppm, depending on the pool surface and manufacturer guidance
- Cyanuric acid: 30β50 ppm for many outdoor pools
If free chlorine is low and combined chlorine is elevated, contaminants are consuming the sanitizer. This is common after heavy use, wind-blown debris, or a neglected pool. If cyanuric acid is extremely high, adding more chlorine may not solve the problem efficiently; partial draining and fresh water may be necessary. Antelope Valley water is also hard, so calcium hardness and scale deserve attention, especially around tile, salt cells, and waterline fittings.
Do not mix chlorine products, acids, or other chemicals together. Add one chemical at a time, with the circulation system running, and follow the product label.
