The replacement must match the voltage, amperage, number of circuits, and type of pump. Many older systems use 115 or 230 volts, while larger equipment may require separate circuits. A pump timer should be rated for the motor load, and separate equipment such as a booster pump should not simply be added to an already overloaded contact.
For single-speed pumps, a quality mechanical timer from brands such as Intermatic can still be a sensible, economical repair. For variable-speed pumps and multi-equipment pools, a digital controller or automation platform is often a better long-term choice. Pentair IntelliCenter, Jandy Aqualink, and Hayward Omni systems can coordinate pumps, heaters, salt systems, lights, and valves rather than treating each device as an unrelated switch.
Compatibility is important. Some variable-speed pumps communicate digitally with their manufacturer's automation system, while others can be controlled only through relay wiring. Installing a basic timer on a pump designed for digital communication may eliminate speed control or cause the pump to operate inefficiently. A salt chlorine generator also needs adequate flow and must be interlocked so it cannot produce chlorine when the circulation pump is off.
Before replacing anything, photograph the existing wiring, record each equipment model number, and check whether the service panel has room for the new control.
