The first step is a reliable water test. Test strips are useful for a quick warning, but cloudy-water diagnosis calls for a drop-based test or digital analysis. In a properly maintained Quartz Hill pool, free chlorine is commonly kept around 2-4 parts per million (PPM), with a target closer to 3-5 PPM during stretches of intense summer heat. The correct level depends on stabilizer, or cyanuric acid (CYA), sunlight, and bather load.
Pool pH should generally stay between 7.4 and 7.6. When pH climbs above 7.8, chlorine becomes less effective and calcium carbonate can begin coming out of solution, creating a white haze or scale. If chemistry is balanced but the water remains cloudy, the filter is the next place we look. A pool filter does not make dirty water disappear; it physically captures particles. Once it is loaded with dust, pollen, dead algae, or plaster residue, flow drops and the filter may stop polishing the water effectively.
For a Pentair, Jandy, or Hayward cartridge filter, check the pressure gauge against the clean starting pressure. A rise of about 8-10 PSI above that clean reading usually means the cartridges need to be removed and cleaned thoroughly. Spraying only the outside of the element is not enough. Fine desert dust can lodge deep between the pleats, and a garden hose held too close can damage the fabric. Cartridges that are cracked, flattened, or more than several seasons old may need replacement.
Sand filters require proper backwashing and rinsing, while DE filters need the correct amount of fresh diatomaceous earth after backwashing. A DE filter operating without enough DE can send cloudy water straight back into the pool and may damage the grids. We also inspect the multiport valve, pressure gauge, air relief assembly, and waste line. A valve that leaks internally can prevent the filter from doing its job even when the tank looks fine.
In the Antelope Valley, filter loading can happen quickly after a windy day. High winds carry sand, roof dust, tumbleweeds, and fine debris into pools from Quartz Hill to Littlerock. A filter that was adequate in a sheltered backyard may need more frequent cleaning when the pool sits near an open lot or Joshua trees.

If the pump is pulling air, the basket may not stay full, and the pool will receive little effective filtration.

We also look for air bubbles returning through the jets, a leaking pump lid O-ring, and valves that were left partly closed after equipment service.
For many residential pools, running the pump 8-12 hours per day is a reasonable starting point, but circulation needs rise during a 110°F-plus summer, after heavy use, or while clearing cloudy water. Every pool is different. A variable-speed Pentair or Jandy pump can often improve filtration while using less electricity, but only if it runs long enough at an effective speed. A low-speed schedule that saves energy but barely moves water will not solve dead spots.
Sometimes the pool is chemically balanced and the equipment is functioning, but a contamination event keeps reintroducing particles. Dust storms, nearby construction, irrigation overspray, decomposing leaves, pollen, and animal waste can all create a demand for chlorine. In Lancaster and Palmdale, wind can push fine dust through a tightly covered pool area, and a cover itself can transfer dirt into the water if it is not cleaned before removal.
Skim and vacuum visible debris, empty baskets, brush walls and steps, and keep the water level correct. Avoid using a clarifier repeatedly without addressing the filter; clarifier can clump particles, but the filter still has to remove them. Flocculant is not a routine substitute for maintenance and can create additional cleanup if used incorrectly.
