CYA matters because it protects chlorine from our strong desert sun but also changes the chlorine level needed for effective algae treatment. For example, a pool with 60 ppm of CYA needs a much higher treatment chlorine level than a pool with 30 ppm. Simply pouring in a fixed amount of shock is not a reliable plan.
We also check pH before a high-chlorine treatment. Chlorine works more efficiently when pH is controlled, generally around 7.2 to 7.4 during an algae recovery. Lancaster’s hard water can push calcium hardness and scaling higher over time, while repeated water additions can change alkalinity and dilute stabilizer. Those factors affect how the pool responds to treatment.
Never mix liquid chlorine, cal-hypo, trichlor, or acid together, and never combine different dry chemicals in the same bucket. Chemical reactions can create toxic gas or a dangerous fire. If the water is severely green, cloudy, or full of debris, professional testing is a safer starting point than guessing.
Leaves, pollen, sand, dead insects, and windblown Joshua tree debris consume chlorine as they break down. Vacuuming is also important. If the pool contains a heavy layer of dead algae or dirt, vacuuming to waste may be preferable to sending all of it through the filter. That prevents the filter from loading up immediately and helps remove organic material from the system. Water must be replaced carefully in the Antelope Valley, where a low water level can expose plaster or cause the pump to lose prime.
