Strong Antelope Valley gusts carry fine sand, agricultural dust, tumbleweeds, leaves, and Joshua tree debris directly into the water. That material does not just make the pool look dirty. It can clog baskets, load up the filter, strain the pump, and consume chlorine.
The problem is especially noticeable after a hot, dry stretch. With summer temperatures reaching 110°F or more, intense UV breaks down chlorine quickly, while dust and organic debris give algae a place to start. Hard water, common throughout the Antelope Valley, can add another complication if evaporation concentrates calcium and the water is allowed to drift out of balance.
After a significant wind event in Littlerock, work through this checklist before swimming or running the equipment for an extended period.
Pro Tip: After a major windstorm, run the pump in shorter intervals while checking the pressure gauge. If pressure rises quickly, stop and clean the filter rather than forcing a clogged system to run.
Start by removing large debris with a leaf net. Do not use the pool vacuum to pull in tumbleweeds, palm pieces, or handfuls of sand. Oversized debris can clog the vacuum line or fill the pump basket rapidly. If the pool has a lot of settled dust, brush the walls and floor toward the main drain after removing the larger material.
Next, empty the skimmer and pump baskets. Turn off the pump before opening the pump lid, and make sure the lid O-ring is clean and seated correctly when you close it. A basket packed with windblown debris can restrict water flow and cause the pump to run hot. Never operate a pump with a cracked basket or a lid that is drawing air.

For a sand or diatomaceous earth filter, follow the manufacturer's backwash procedure and rinse the filter afterward. A DE filter should be recharged with the correct amount of fresh DE after backwashing; running it without DE can allow dirt through and may damage the grids. Cartridge filters should be removed and rinsed with a garden hose from top to bottom, working between pleats. Avoid using a pressure washer, which can tear the filter fabric.
Fine Littlerock dust can load a cartridge quickly, sometimes within days of a major windstorm. If the pressure climbs again soon after cleaning, the cartridge may be undersized, damaged, or overdue for replacement. Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward equipment all have model-specific flow and filter requirements, so do not substitute a filter based only on physical size.
If the pump basket is full, the pump is noisy, or the pressure is unusually high or low, shut the system down and have it inspected. A low-pressure reading can indicate an air leak, water-level problem, blocked skimmer line, or pump-side restriction.
Equipment Check: Mark your clean filter pressure on a piece of tape inside the equipment area. That number gives you a reliable baseline for knowing when your Pentair, Jandy, or Hayward filter is loaded with dust.
Wind does not automatically mean you should pour in a large dose of chlorine. Test first with a dependable liquid kit or a professionally tested sample. For most residential pools, maintain free chlorine around 2 to 4 PPM, with the proper target depending on the cyanuric acid level. Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.8; a target of approximately 7.4 to 7.6 is comfortable and helps chlorine work effectively.
Check total alkalinity, generally 80 to 120 PPM, and cyanuric acid, commonly maintained around 30 to 50 PPM for traditionally chlorinated pools. Saltwater pools still need regular chlorine and pH testing; the salt cell does not eliminate water maintenance. Calcium hardness is particularly important in Littlerock, Palmdale, and Lancaster, where hard fill water and evaporation can contribute to scale. A typical target is about 200 to 400 PPM, depending on the pool surface and manufacturer guidance.
If the water is cloudy after dust enters the pool, first remove debris, clean the filter, and run circulation. Do not add algaecide, clarifier, shock, or acid all at once without testing.
