Do not judge capacity by filter size alone. Check the filter’s pressure gauge, clean starting pressure, flow rate, plumbing diameter, valves, and the pump’s total dynamic head (TDH). A filter may be rated for high flow, but restrictive 1.5-inch plumbing or several sharp elbows can prevent the system from reaching that performance efficiently.
Equipment Check: Have the contractor measure clean filter pressure and record it after startup. In Lancaster’s dust and wind, a rising pressure reading is an early warning that the filter needs cleaning before circulation and energy use suffer.
Before adding a spa or waterfall, identify the existing pipe sizes and where each line runs. A properly programmed 2.7-horsepower variable-speed pump may be more efficient and quieter than a poorly matched single-speed pump, but only if the plumbing and filter can handle the selected speed.
Also verify the electrical panel before equipment is ordered. A new heater, booster pump, automation system, or salt chlorine generator may require additional circuits, GFCI protection, bonding, conduit, or a larger subpanel. Equipment upgrades often run about $2,500 to $7,500 for a straightforward pump-and-filter replacement, while major replumbing, electrical work, automation, and multiple water features can push a hydraulic remodel well beyond $10,000. Site access and concealed plumbing can change those numbers substantially.
Hydraulic work is least expensive when it is included before the deck, coping, plaster, and tile are installed. Before construction, request a simple equipment schedule showing pump models, filter size, heater flow requirements, pipe diameters, valve locations, and the intended operating mode for each feature.
Have the contractor confirm that the spa can heat and circulate properly without starving the pool. Check that every suction outlet is compliant and properly configured, and that water features have isolation valves for maintenance.
