Surface Debris Is Usually a Routine-Service Issue

A pool with leaves, dust, pine needles, or a few tumbleweeds can often be brought back under control with vacuuming, skimming, brushing, and a properly operating filtration system. If the water is still clear enough to see the drain and the walls are not slimy, the chemistry may be close to normal.

For routine water, we generally look for a pH of about 7.4 to 7.6, free chlorine commonly maintained around 2 to 5 parts per million (ppm), and appropriate cyanuric acid (CYA), usually 30 to 50 ppm for an outdoor chlorine pool. In the Antelope Valley's intense UV, chlorine disappears quickly when CYA is too low. On the other hand, excessive CYA can make chlorine less effective and complicate algae recovery.

Lancaster's wind can also pack fine sand into the skimmer, pump basket, and filter. A homeowner may think the pool needs more chemicals when the real problem is poor circulation caused by a clogged basket or dirty cartridge. Signs the Pool Needs Algae Treatment

Algae treatment is different from removing floating debris. Green, cloudy, or yellow water; slippery walls; green dust on the floor; and algae growing around returns, steps, or shaded areas are clear warning signs. Black algae appears as dark spots with deep roots, often in plaster pores and grout lines. It usually requires aggressive brushing and repeated chemical treatment rather than a single dose of algaecide.

For an active bloom, we test more than just chlorine. We check pH, free and combined chlorine, CYA, alkalinity, and often calcium hardness. A typical recovery may require adjusting pH near 7.2 to 7.4, adding liquid chlorine based on the pool's volume and CYA level, brushing every surface, and running filtration continuously until the water clears. The actual chlorine target varies; blindly pouring in product can damage liners, fade finishes, or create a dangerous mixture with other chemicals.

Algaecide is not a substitute for sanitation. Many copper-based products can contribute to staining, especially in hard Antelope Valley water. The filter also has to remove the dead algae. If pressure rises roughly 8 to 10 psi above the clean starting pressure, the cartridge may need cleaning or a sand filter may need backwashing. A pool that stays cloudy after several treatment cycles may need flocculant, a filter inspection, or partial water replacement.

Equipment Check: Mark your filter's clean starting pressure after service. If the gauge climbs about 8 to 10 psi above that number during cleanup, stop and clean or backwash the filter so circulation does not collapse.

Stains Are Not Always Algae

Brown, orange, green, or black marks do not automatically mean the pool needs another chlorine treatment. Staining can come from metals, organic debris, calcium scale, or algae embedded in a rough surface. A simple test with a chlorine tablet or vitamin C can help identify certain stain types, but it should be performed carefully and interpreted by someone who understands the finish and chemistry.

Hard water is common throughout the Antelope Valley. High calcium hardness, evaporation, and repeated top-offs can leave scale on tile, waterline surfaces, salt cells, and heat exchangers. If a pool is shocked repeatedly without correcting pH and hardness, the water may become more aggressive toward equipment or more likely to deposit scale.

A true stain treatment may involve lowering chlorine temporarily, using an ascorbic-acid product for iron or rust-type stains, treating metals, or descaling affected areas. Copper staining requires a different approach. The right process depends on testing; adding random chemicals can turn a removable stain into a permanent one. When Neglected Water Requires a Full Restoration

A neglected pool can contain leaves and debris below the surface, a damaged cleaner, blocked suction lines, and chemistry far outside safe operating ranges.

A restoration generally includes removing debris, emptying baskets, testing the water, brushing and vacuuming, treating algae, cleaning or inspecting the filter, checking circulation, and performing follow-up visits. In severe cases, the pool may need a partial drain and refill, but draining is not a casual solution. Groundwater, shell movement, plaster condition, pool construction, and local water-disposal requirements all matter. A licensed professional should evaluate those risks first.
