The first step is a complete test, including free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, and salt level when the pool has a salt system. For a typical residential pool, free chlorine is commonly maintained around 2–4 parts per million (PPM), although the correct target depends on the cyanuric acid level. With stabilizer at 50 PPM, many pools need a higher chlorine target than homeowners expect to prevent algae.
A pH between 7.2 and 7.8 is generally workable, but chlorine is most effective toward the lower end during an algae treatment. High pH, especially above 7.8, reduces chlorine efficiency and can worsen calcium scaling in Antelope Valley water. Equipment Check: With the pump running, compare the return jets and inspect the skimmer basket. Weak flow in one area, air bubbles, or a pump basket that will not stay full can point to a circulation problem.
First, remove leaves, tumbleweeds, and visible debris. Empty skimmer and pump baskets, brush all pool surfaces, and clean the filter. Next, test the water and correct pH before adding the treatment dose recommended for the pool volume and condition. Keep the pump running long enough to distribute the chemicals and continue brushing and vacuuming as dead algae collects.
Check the filter pressure and water movement several times during the process. If pressure climbs rapidly, the filter is loading with debris and needs service. If pressure is unusually low with weak returns, investigate a suction, impeller, valve, or air-leak problem. Do not simply increase chlorine while the circulation system is underperforming.
After the water clears, maintain a consistent sanitizer level rather than allowing chlorine to fall to zero between service visits. In summer, test more frequently because UV and heat consume chlorine quickly. Keep the water level high enough for proper skimmer operation, but avoid overfilling after dust storms or irrigation runoff. A clean pool cover can reduce debris, though it must be used safely and maintained so it does not introduce more contamination.
For context, a straightforward algae cleanup may cost a few hundred dollars, while repeated treatments plus a circulation repair can cost more. Pump repairs, filter service, valve replacement, or salt-cell cleaning vary by equipment and access. Correctly identifying the cause is usually less expensive than paying for several unsuccessful shock treatments.
